I'VE TOLD YOU 1100 TIMES
We were host to the national rally of the 1100 Car Club over the weekend of 18-19 July. The Saturday saw the first arrivals of 1100s (and closely related 1300s) in time for their Annual General Meeting which was held aboard our BMMO S16. The Club also hired one of our buses to take those staying overnight to an evening of organised entertainment.
Even more 1100s came on the Sunday when Station Road was completely filled with variations of the model, including those of the Potts' family and Kevin Hill. Many remember these cars with affection, not least Basil Fawlty's neglected estate version so cruelly but hilariously beaten with a branch. Sadly the classic sketch was not re-enacted. There were also quite a few Allegros, although these don't seem to enjoy the same popularity, and rebuilds that looked like kit cars - as one owner said, 1100s with all the rot removed!
We had registered a couple of bus journeys on the Sunday and these were very well patronised. The numbers attending were quite a surprise but fortunately we mustered enough staff, some at short notice, to keep on top of demand, critically in the cafeteria. As usual lessons can be learned, for example having to accommodate the spares tent on the grass in the car park made the admission barrier very tedious to manage.
The latest 1100 Car Club magazine is full of pictures taken on our site with an article on the weekend promised for their next edition. With luck that will say the 1100 owners enjoyed being with us. The gathering moves from location to location each year to give variety - but hopefully we will welcome them again before long.
