Omnibus 188 - September 2008

WYTHALL WORKS

Not much to report this time! This does not mean that not much effort is going in to maintaining the site, just that at this time of year most of it is routine keeping the site in good condition for our visitors. Thanks to all the volunteers who quietly get on with all these essential tasks.

One job done that does deserve a mention is the cleaning and then repainting of the pit walls. Leo Coley did most of the work with assistance from Geoff Hodkinson in cleaning the lights. Unfortunately the problem of water leaking in to the pit has not been resolved but at least these days we do have a pump that is capable of draining it rather than having to use a bucket!

ENGINEERING ENDEAVOURS

The West Bromwich Daimler CVG6/30 finally gained its Class VI certificate in early August. Although 248 did not quite make the July event day as predicted in the last 'Omnibus' it is perhaps more fitting it should have its debut at the "Operating Days" at the end of August when more enthusiasts would be present. Prior to the test it had also received some cosmetic treatment. Checkplate panels were cleaned with acid solution on worst parts whilst, with thanks to Maurice Collignon, the remainder have been cleaned leaving all parts looking much more presentable. The wheels have been given a coat of paint which again has given a much smarter look.

Another change in the Class VI fleet is that the S15 is being rested following the expiry of its test in July. Its place has been taken by bringing the S16 back in to use and this passed its test in mid-July.

Looking ahead, it is planned to submit the D10 for a Class V Test in September followed by the open-top D9 in October. The Leyland National might also be tested prior to the Midland Red Day if it does not require too much work.

Kev's paint shop continues to be busy with the recent outshopping of Fleetlines WMPTE 4613 and Walsall 116.

The Midland Red DD12 Daimler Fleetline is now receiving attention by Kevin. Prior to that both engine cover grilles were repaired, cleaned and finished to undercoat, while the illuminated 'MIDLAND' fibreglass nameplate was cleaned and repainted ready for re-fixing. The wheels were cleaned off and finished to top coat. 6015 has now been fitted with set of Worcester garage blinds, while the front and rear mechanisms have been attended to in respect of jamming!

After 6015, the LD8, Daimler Roadliner and Sheffield Bristol VRT are expected in the paint shop, though not necessarily in that order.

Longer term, the Red & White Guy Arab is expected to be in the repaint programme for 2009, and it has been proposed that the Crosville Bristol L5G should also be repainted next year, though this is still subject to review.

Elsewhere, there are a number of jobs being done on the Metrobus, while there are plans for work to resume on the Barton Leyland PD1 and the Walsall Leyland PD2.

There are some more general jobs to do too. For instance, leather seats need treating to prevent them drying out - does anyone know where to buy the special wax in quantity? And then everything on display in the Power Hall simply needs dusting every so often.

177

Wythall's local bus service, the 177 from central Birmingham was operated for the last time by Midland Rider on Saturday 30 August. The 177 has now passed to Diamond Bus (now part of Rotala, but latterly part of Go-Ahead Group), which has gained several routes in the Redditch area.

Midland Rider used its Routemaster for the final day's service, with Museum's BMMO S16 and 6311 making guest appearances.
