Omnibus 138 - November 2000

ATLANTEAN PROGRESS

Since the last report on the South Yorkshire Atlantean JKW 290 W (1790) a vast amount of restoration work has taken place.

In June 1999 a number of exterior body panels were removed and replaced. Work was required on a body pillar which had become detached from the stress panel although the rest of the body was found to be in excellent condition. A few coats of original South Yorkshire PTE brown and cream were applied to tidy the vehicle until funds could be found for a full external repaint.

A number of jobs which had been outstanding were rectified at the beginning of the year. The gearbox flange gasket needed replacing to cure a large oil leak from the gearbox. A number of electrical faults were rectified and the famous ‘pump drive plates’ have had new plates fitted. A worn steering drag link end has been overhauled in preparation for an MOT test.

In July 2000, 1790 was despatched to Bereton Motor Services (London National fame) for an external repaint. Once this was completed 1790 visited Cannock MOT station for an MOT; the result being a pass. On returing to Wythall 1790 has had all the original transfers applied. The interior has been subjected to a thorough clean and a number of original seats sourced for the upper and lower decks. The interior restoration is now nearly complete with the recovering of the remaining seats.

1790 returned to her home town of Sheffield for the Meadowhall Transport Rally in September. Further work is planned for the winter with restoration nearing completion.
